A bedroom rug you actually step onto

Measure the exposed area beside the bed rather than choosing from the bed width alone. A rug almost entirely hidden beneath the frame offers little visible pattern or bedside coverage. Try its position with bedside tables, drawers and the bedroom door operating normally. Two separate bedside rugs are another layout worth testing.

Start with the real room

Think of the rug as the boundary of an activity. The useful dimensions are the ones occupied by people and furniture together, including the space needed to get up and move around. A photograph can suggest a mood, but it cannot measure that working area for you.
