The reading-corner rug

A small rug can give one chair a deliberate place in a larger room. Test it with the chair, footstool and side table in use, not pushed neatly together. Keep the rug clear of the main walking route and make sure the chair remains stable when you sit down or move the footstool.

Start with the real room

Think of the rug as the boundary of an activity. The useful dimensions are the ones occupied by people and furniture together, including the space needed to get up and move around. A photograph can suggest a mood, but it cannot measure that working area for you.
